OEM, aftermarket and recycled, as the documents label them
Every guide on this subject explains the difference between an OEM part and an aftermarket one. Almost none of them says how often carriers actually specified each. This one does, on settled part lines, with the caveat that the two estimating systems involved do not use the same words.

Two systems, two vocabularies, and no translation printed anywhere
Mitchell documents label parts New, Aftermarket, Qual Recycled, OE Discount and Sublet. CCC ONE documents label them OEM and Non OEM. Neither document says the two sets correspond, and they do not correspond cleanly: "New" and "OEM" overlap heavily but are not the same claim, and CCC has no separate word for a recycled part where Mitchell does. Any cross-carrier aftermarket rate you read anywhere, including on this page, rests on somebody having decided how to map those columns. Here is ours, and here are the raw labels underneath it so the mapping can be discarded.

The mix, once the labels are grouped
Grouped into four buckets, the corpus is overwhelmingly new factory parts. That is a real finding about these documents and a weak one about the industry, for a reason the next section covers: this corpus is heavily weighted toward vehicles where an aftermarket part barely exists as an option.

Coverage is lopsided, so make-level conclusions are off the table
BMW carries 293 settled part lines here and Mitsubishi carries 1. That is not a sampling wobble, it is what walks into one shop that does a lot of European and exotic work. Any claim of the form "aftermarket availability is worse on make X" is unsupportable from this data, and it is exactly the claim a page like this is tempted to make.

The part number is the durable half of the line
A description and a price is a claim that has to be defended. A part number is a fact that can be checked by anyone with a parts catalogue, which is the reason this corpus keeps the printed number wherever the document carried one: 1,088 of the settled part lines have one. Separately from the carrier documents, 8,564 factory part numbers with list prices are catalogued across 7 makes. Those two things are different and are never blended: one is what somebody paid, the other is what the manufacturer lists.
- A part number is trim-specific, and the trim comes from the VIN rather than the badge on the tailgate
- A number on the estimate is what makes a supplement about the wrong part a five-minute conversation
- This site does not check part availability, stock, or whether a number has been superseded or discontinued. It has no live parts feed and no marketplace
What decides OEM against aftermarket in practice
General industry practice, labelled as such because this corpus does not measure it: the choice is usually made by the policy language and the vehicle's age rather than by the estimator. Manufacturer repair procedures, structural and safety-related components, calibration requirements after a sensor-bearing part is disturbed, and any warranty still on the vehicle all push toward factory parts. None of that is measured here and none of it should be read off the table above.
Where price sits in this
On some repairs the part sourcing decides the whole estimate and the labor rate barely moves it. On the 2024 Ferrari Purosangue published on this site, parts were $60,381.27 of a $80,295.39 allowance, roughly three quarters of the document. On the Porsche published alongside it, the labor rate was the entire argument. Knowing which of those two a job is before quoting it is worth more than any general rule about part types.
How this was measured
- Part lines come from the settled parts index, built from carrier estimate documents with the VIN and claim number stripped before the file is written. 1,510 lines carry a part-type label and all of them are counted here.
- Labels are counted exactly as printed. The four-bucket grouping is an editorial mapping across two vendor vocabularies and both the buckets and the raw labels are published so the mapping can be checked or discarded.
- Per-carrier figures are reported only above 50 settled lines. Everything below that threshold is named and excluded rather than dropped.
- Documents filed under an estimating vendor rather than an insurer, and documents whose carrier could not be read, are grouped as unattributed rather than assigned to anybody.
What this page cannot tell you
Published for the same reason the sample sizes are. A guide that never names its own limits is asking to be trusted rather than checked.
- Aftermarket and non-OEM lines are 74 lines in total. Split across carriers and makes that is a small number very quickly, and no per-make aftermarket rate is published for that reason.
- The corpus is weighted toward European and exotic vehicles, where an aftermarket alternative frequently does not exist. A corpus from a high-volume domestic lot would almost certainly show a different mix, and this one cannot predict it.
- A zero in the carrier table is a statement about the lines in this corpus. It is not evidence about a carrier's policy, its national behaviour, or what it does in another state.
- Nothing here measures part fit, part quality, or repair outcomes. It measures what was written on an estimate and paid.
- The OEM catalogue covers a handful of makes and is separate from the settled-price corpus. A part number being catalogued says nothing about whether it is currently available.
Before you ask
How often do carriers actually specify aftermarket parts?
In this corpus, 74 of 1,510 settled part lines, which is 5%. That figure should be read with the corpus in mind: it is weighted toward vehicles that have very little aftermarket support, so it is a floor for this shop's mix rather than an industry rate.
Does "Non OEM" mean the same thing as "Aftermarket"?
They are close, and they come from different systems. CCC ONE prints Non OEM; Mitchell prints Aftermarket and also has separate labels for recycled and remanufactured parts that CCC does not. Grouping them is defensible and it is still a decision somebody made, which is why the raw label counts are on this page.
Can this tell me whether a specific part is available aftermarket?
No. There is no live parts feed here, no availability lookup, no stock check and no discontinuation check. What exists is what carriers paid for parts that appear in settled estimates, and a catalogue of factory part numbers with list prices.
Which makes are covered well?
Very unevenly. BMW (293), Tesla (156), Porsche (136) are the deepest. Several makes are in single digits and one is a single line. The by-make table on this page prints every count for exactly that reason.
